Technical activewear requires slightly different care from everyday cotton clothing.
Stretch fibres, compression fabrics and moisture-managing finishes can be affected by high temperatures, aggressive detergents and repeated tumble drying. A gentler routine can help preserve fit, shape and performance.
Always begin with the individual garment label, as its instructions should take priority.
Wash at a lower temperature
For many activewear pieces, a cooler wash is sufficient.
High temperatures can place additional stress on elastic fibres and may gradually affect the garment’s ability to recover after stretching.
Washing at 30°C on a gentle cycle is often appropriate, unless the care label states otherwise.
Avoid fabric softener
Fabric softener can leave a coating on technical fibres.
Over time, this may reduce the material’s ability to manage moisture effectively. It can also contribute to residue and trapped odours.
A small amount of mild detergent is usually enough. Using more detergent does not necessarily create a cleaner result and may be harder to rinse from dense performance fabrics.
Wash similar items together
Activewear can be damaged by rougher garments, metal fastenings and heavy fabrics.
Wash technical pieces with similar lightweight clothing where possible. Close zips and fasten hooks before washing, and consider turning garments inside out to protect the outer surface.
A laundry bag can provide additional protection for delicate pieces.
Air dry where possible
Tumble-dryer heat can gradually weaken stretch fibres and affect garment shape.
Air drying is generally the gentler option. Lay pieces flat or hang them away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
Avoid placing technical clothing directly on a radiator.
Allow garments to dry before storing
Do not leave damp activewear inside a gym bag or laundry basket for long periods.
Moisture and warmth can encourage persistent odours. Allow garments to air before washing, and make sure they are fully dry before folding them away.
Good care does not need to be complicated.
Lower temperatures, mild detergent and air drying can make a meaningful difference to how activewear looks, feels and performs over time.
